I live in the Los Angeles area and would like to sail my H16 in Sail Bay (in Mission Bay, San Diego) this summer. What is the best place to launch? I have a baby bob installed, do the Ingram ST. and Mission Bay Drive bridges allow clearance at high tide? If I do have to monitor the tides, what is a good web site to get this information Any other tip/tricks I should know about? Thanks, JohnS.. |

The bridge to the ocean is always high enough. I do not know about the other. I think you have to watch the tide for that. Are you launching where you have to worry about both? Maybe you should just launch in the "sail bay" side. |

Santa Clara Point. El Carmel Point. Both have ramps and beach. All bridges are tall enough for Hobies at high tides. |

Hey, what timing! I was thinking of heading down to Mission Bay in a couple of weeks. Any good Beach launching areas? For tides, weather and wind, I use weather.com. They tend to be fairly accurate most of the time. I like the hourly wind forecasts, especially. http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreati ... utlet_boat The above link is set to Dana Point, where I usually launch, but you can easily change it to wherever you like. |

The two spots I mentioned above are the best spots for the Mission Bay / Sail bay area. You can not launch into the ocean anywhere in the area. There is a spot at La Jolla Shores up the coast that allows beach launching, but it is always full of kayak tour groups and the life guards won't let you keep your sails up (safety / visability issue). You can launch from beaches around Bahia Point, Fiesta Island and there are a couple more ramps on the east side "ski bay"... too many power boats, skiers and jet skis though. |

Sailed off Santa Clare point today. Very Nice. It was a good thing that I arrived by 8:30 AM as parking is scarce. Slid the cat off the trailer on to grass and short scoot to the waters edge. After putting the H16 on the beach, had breakfast at a great little restaurant half a block away. Met some nice sailors of other cats. Excellent place to sail! Wind came up around 11 AM and was really blowing by 1 PM. Thanks to all for great advice! |
