A couple of question on the care of my old Hobie 16. The first is, is there an easy way to get rid of the old decal stripe on the side of the hull? The second is, are there maintenence issues which I should be doing every year besides changing rigging? How about lubrication points and type /and care of sails? I am embarrrased to say I have had this boat for 12 years and never really dealt with this.

For your first question, try: http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewt ... ght=decals.

At the end of every season before storing for the winter I like to check all of my rigging and anchor points, fraying of lines and sheets, abnormal wear on the sails, and any possible soft spots that may have developed on the hulls. I don't know that I lube anything other than sailkote on the mainsail luff rope at the beginning of the season and marine grease on the rudder cams.

Another option (link) to deal with faded and damaged decal stripes is to paint over them.

It worked great. These were originally gray and black stripes:

Alan,

I followed the think a bit and if you would be so kind to confirm a few things for me.
1) Are the red/orange/etc. stripes in the picture above of the result of your painting over the stripes?
2)what kind of paint did you use (as in was it enamel or whatever)?
3)were any of the original stripes chipped or missing a bit at the edges and if so how did the paint hold out?

I like the idea and have been thinking about replacing my stripes but I am sure there are problems with that option that are larger then the problems with painting.

I haven't used it, but I have heard "Goof off" works well for removing decals and stickers. Post your results!

I just used a hair dryer, once the decal gets hot it usually comes off fairly easily.

Yes, cheap rattle can spray enamel, yes but not too bad, holding fine- I'm into the second season after painting.

A lot of taping but easy to do!! Benefits - see the link at my post.

Alignment is easy since you have a reference edge. If you take care when taping and ensure the edges are down tight so you don't get bleed under, and mask off areas that will not be painted it is a snap. I can't imagine what problems there could be. Plus enamel comes off easily if you make a mistake.

My HCE boat I hit em' with the pressure washer and they were just gone. I don't think it took 5 minutes to blow em' all off.

Maintenance suggestions:

Using a Q-tip, I apply marine grease to the various rudder mechanism components, and then actuate them a few times, by handle and by rudder (simulate a kick-up)

Clean and grease the mast ball/socket.

I also break any fastener (bolt/nut) "freezing" that may be occurring, by turning them about 1/8th turn out, then back to the original position - especially the plastic cam adjuster screws and the adjuster plate screws in the upper rudder casting (H17).

Every use: fresh-water rinse the living-hell (i.e. salt) out of the boat - (people always forget to rinse under the shroud-adjuster covers)

Add some wheel bearing grease (trailer).

Changing the rigging every year is extreme (ly good for your local rigging supplier!). Many Hobies are running around with rigging made in the 1970s and 80's, which should give you a mental picture of the risk curve. I store my boat mast up, and sail weekly, year 'round in salt water; - two years is my comfort zone. If my boat were used monthly, stored mast-down, and kept dry, I would not hesitate, in the least, to go five years.

Peace,
