Hi All,

Got a new hobie 14 and it is incredible shape for a '77! however the rudders have some trailing edge damage. As you can see in the pictures the owner did do some repairs, he said he used "hobie stuff"? it appears to work quite well for a period of time. Any way they appear to be fiberglass build?

Can anyone recommend the compound to use for the repair? Or a repair place in Canada?

Thanks in advance.

Codie

MarineTex. It will last for a while but eventually chip out when it gets whacked. It is easy to use though, 2-part epoxy putty.

The problem with any of these putties is that they don’t get a real good “bite” on the existing rudder surface. For a lasting repair, you would need to use actual fiberglass. But trailing edges are a little tricky, not much material there to work with.

I second SM's advice for MarineTex. I had some dings in my fiberglass rudders and MTex did the trick. For the small dings, you can save time sanding (and sanding and sanding) by using some packing tape to fold over a (very small) dollop of MTex on the trailing edge and peel off after it cures. If you're careful not to use too much MTex, it makes a tidy repair.
