In May 2014, Lars Simonsen and his partner Suzi packed their kids Tiuri (7) and Liva (5) onto a pair of Hobie® Mirage® Tandem Islands and set off for Istanbul from Denmark. The trip took 18 months. Lars shares a special moment of the voyage.

Traveling in two Hobie tandem islands in Italy in the middle of winter, and the attention that brings, can make your day very unusual.

We prepared ourselves for a most bizarre day on the island of Elba. The president of the sailing club drove us to the ferry at Piombino. He would return to pick us up later. We walked down to the big building.

“Are you Mr. Lars?” asked the man in the ticket office.

“Yes,” I said.

Please go down to the ferry.

At the ferry there were two men standing, showing the passengers and cars on-board.
One of the men said, “Are you Mr. Lars?”

“Yes,” I said.

“Good,” he nodded. “Please follow me.” We followed the man onto the ferry and all the way to the captain. The captain strode across the room to welcome us and then invited us for coffee and cake at his table.

Every day should start like this, I thought.

Often in Italy lots of people were receiving us on the beaches. We had a whole network of people helping us. This was also how we got those special experiences along the way. Photo courtesy Lars Simonsen.
