I went out Sunday and put the Simple Hobie Motor Mount through it's paces on Hobie's largest and heaviest fishing kayak, the Tandem Island.

Although this short video is really meant to show how well the mount works, I was surprised to find that the little 18lb thrust motor I've been using in the videos will push the big Tandem Island just as fast as it'll push the Adventure Island.

Great review Tom! Always learn something reading your threads. I still have your PVC bunk design on my trailer from years ago.

Very nice and clean.
I've been working on such a mount for my TI.
I had assumed the fitting on the TI would perfectly accommodate a standard PVC pipe (SCH 40 or 80)
The 1 1/4" pipe is pretty sloppy and 1 1/2 too wide.........Dunno .... :?
Wondering; If the 2013 TI is different since 1 1/2'' seems to be the diameter that has been recommended for this mount .
I can tighten the 1 1/4 pipe w/ some pipe tape, but that's kind of funky.

It doesn't have to fit tight into the rod holder as the spacing between the main upright and the outer section will fit tight against the hull. In other words, it doesn't rely on a tight fit in the rod holder. That's not what secures it. You want the tube in the holder to slide in and out easily.

I discovered exactly that today while playing with some PVC.
1 1/4" is the size .......I realize I wouldn't have wanted it any tighter.

Just a random thought I used in another project. If you want a firm fit, but be able to remove a tube from inside another tube later, cut out a vertical slot in a tube (the size of which being about the same diameter as the "target" tube). When you squeeze the slotted tube, its diameter will reduce enough to fit, but the "spring tension" will help to hold it firmly in the target tube.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for this idea, Tom. I have been thinking about some electric motor help on my AI to deal with the currents in Juan de Fuca Strait, which runs between my home on Vancouver Island, and the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Your idea for this simple mount inspired me to start getting the necessary pieces together. I've gone with a Minn Kota 30 lb thrust motor rather than your 18 but everything else will be the same. The last couple of things to buy will be the clamps to hold the motor shaft and a battery. Having the motor will increase the number of days i can be on the water fishing for salmon in the AI as I can push the envelope a bit further .
Thanks again!

Glad you like it. I talked to a guy today that just finished and tried one on his TI and he seems to like it as well. Simple.

To All,

I have a 2012 TI - was thinking about using the cup holders and noticed that some PVC sked 40 end caps fit nicely in the holders. My thought was to Goop them into the bottom with a hole drilled thru the side, aligned with the slot in the hull. That way you can attach PVC pipe into cap and lock it w a J bolt, entering thru the slot.....

My 2 cents!
