Hi Folks,

Anyone interested in meeting up for a sail on Port Stephens?
We will be camping in the area again from 28 Dec 2014to 10 Jan 2015.

It was a great day last January and meeting Slaughter, Stringy and Tony.

I'll certainly write those dates down in the diary Ian. We are going away out west at some stage over the break. I'll keep in touch.

Yes please! Only this time, can we find me a campsite where the grass is shorter than a foot long?

I will try and get some more volunteers to come, so finalising actual dates would be cool.

By the way, Aldi had a "easy-up" beach shelter for only $20 so I pulled the trigger. While it probably wouldn't do as a tent (the roll-up windows are inside, so rain could get through the mesh, and when the front flap is zipped up, there is a small air gap at the top, allowing midgies in), it would be superb as the Kitchen/storage shelter, as well as being tops for quick shade at a lunch break. It is about as hard to assemble as an umbrella, not like one of those "instant shelters" which spring out of the bag instantly, but then take the skills of Houdini to collapse it again later. It is about 8 feet wide and about 5 feet high, so it is quite roomy. Thumbs up for Aldi, again....

I am thinking of a suitable spot to stay overnight, and remember seeing a nice beach at Corlette, where the dragonboats live. This is on the east side of the marina at Peppers anchorage, and would be quite sheltered in anything but northerlies.

I would be happy setting up a tent in the sand there, which is a fairly wide area. Any thoughts?

Hi Tony,
Concerning suitable dates.

Just saw a PM from Stringy that it may be possible for him to make it on either the Mon 5th, Tues 6th or Wed 7th of Jan.

How would that suit everyone?

Regards, Ian

Thanks Ian, I'll lock in all those dates, and try to make it for all of them. I'll see if any of the Mid Coast Island Club can join us. too.

At this stage I can fit in with others as far as dates. As far as locations for camping, I'd personally prefer to be away from the Christmas crowd Tony. We have plenty of time to research some potential spots.

I'd be in on that guys. Jan 5-7 is fine, and pretty flexible otherwise.
I go up there often & unfortunately it will be busy until the end of the school holidays.
I will also be up there Dec 21-27 if you want anything checked out.
Cheers
Rod

Rod, I am assuming there will be 5 Islands: you, me, Stringy, Slaughter & Ian (PI4WD). At this stage, I am planning to drive round to Nelson Bay to launch where Stringy and Slaughter do, in case I need a hand getting my TI into the water.

I guess details will emerge closer to the 5th. I hope to last through to the 5th.

Hi folks,
Doris and I have safely arrived in Port Stephens. We are thinking of launching tomorow in Fingal bay. We are both looking forward to catching up with everyone on the 5th.

Hi P14WD (Ian?),
I just left Nelson Bay today, but should be OK to return on the 5th.
I am familiar with the area & recommend Shoal Bay boat ramp for launching (especially during this holiday season).
There is good free parking, toilets, fresh water, shade, picnic tables, etc.
It is located off Shoal Bay Rd, approx 300m east of the corner of Tomaree Rd.
From there you have access to either Port Stephens, or the ocean.

Tony, thanks for the update - looking forward to the adventure!
Cheers
Rod

Hi Rod
We know Shoal Bay well and were there yesterday for a walk. It's a great place to launch from. Weather wise it's looking good with 28ยบ and light winds so it can be a relaxed day on the water. Now all we need is a large pod of dolphins to greet us to make it a perfect day. :)
Regards Ian
