Hi Kamberliya and welcome to the forum.
First, since the subject came up, I feel obligated to report briefly on the race. Two Adventures entered the 5 mile race and took first and a close second in their category, creaming the competition. The first paddler came in over 14 minutes later. Ouch!
Now on to your question. All of Hobie's kayaks are recreational. There are two basic types -- pedaling and paddling, although the pedaling kayaks also have the capability to paddle and sail as well. You might want to look at the Hobie website for the different models and their specs:
http://www.hobiecat.com/kayaking/index.htmlThe pedaling kayaks come complete with "Mirage" pedal drive, paddle, seat, rudder, hatches and many cockpit features (pouches, bottle holders, etc). There are lots of accessories to spend your money on as well, but wheels are probably the most helpful. Many dealers offer demonstration rides at no charge or a modest refundable fee -- it's a great way to see how they feel on the water.
I'm not current on prices, but
Mirage kayaks generally run between $1400 and $1800, more for the tandems and next year's models and less for last year's close outs.
Paddling Hobie kayaks are several hundred $ less and also come with seat, paddle and hatches. Sometimes you can find used models locally for a great price. Take a look on your local "Craig's List" if interested.
You can spend less if you just want a basic kayak for the water. But most of us here probably think the Hobie Mirage kayaks are easily your best value and definitely amazing. We're not biased, just knowledgable!
