This is an issue with older boats. Many changes have been made since 2007 to correct it. Even with the issues... the failure rate is very low.

I've never seen a problem with a Sport. I've not had any problems with other models having Mirage drive cracks in 2 years. They have problem fixed now, which was very small # of actual production, and if not they will replace your boat if anything does happen. Buy a Sport and have a blast!

lboiv, welcome to the forum. Hobie has made well over 100,000 kayaks so far and has a pretty enthusiastic following, so you can see that cracks aren't much of a problem for most users. From what I understand, less than 1% of the boats develop cracks, so the odds are excellent, that you will never experience any problem. The majority of drivewell cracks appear to be with the '06 and older Mirage Drive boats in conjunction with Turbofins (which were newly introduced in '06).

Regardless of the odds or manufacturer, there is always a possibility you could be the one whose boat develops a crack. So the more important question might be what happens then. If you look through the forum, you will find some of the most avid Hobie fans are those who have actually had a problem and experienced Hobie's outstanding warranty service.

We also have a Sport -- great little boat (and problem free)! As sunjammers indicates, it should give you many years of great fun and outstanding service! 8)

Today a mile from shore my 2007 Mirage Outback filled very quickly with water. I was informed there were cracks in the hull of cradle area for the drive system. This defect which has prompted Hobie to redesign the retaining bolts. If it was stormy weather I would have had a bad time. I love my Hobie especially since I'm catching fish but there should be a warranty. All my warranty says is two years.

I called the dealer where I purchased the boat and they are playing dumb.

Who should I e-mail?
Thanks,
First Boston

Tell your dealer to file a claim. They can contact our warranty department regardless of the boats age. We will have a look.
