I fitted our sidekicks in exactly the position you are proposing and they work well there!
It's important when fitting the crossbar to bolt it through the hull with large washers internally as many have reported the wellnuts pulling out.
Leaning the kayak up against a wall so you can sit alongside it allows you to reach further in. You may need to use a ratchet to extend your reach.
Or you could add an extra hatch or two to enable better hull access as in the pic above!
Whe drilling a hole choose a bit a couple of sizes smaller than your bolt and screw the bolt in so you get a watertight connection.
