After an unplanned but not too unpleasant tipping our yak while trying to get in it, we have decided to attach our Sidekick AMA.

I would like to put it behind the front seat. That way my wife can have the support of the AMAs when she gets in, and they wil still support me when I get in.

Is this a viable plan re the AMAs or is there a better site to install them?

Grampa, thats exactly where I'd install it. Others I know who sail in the Oasis have it here also, and I've heard no negative reports. The more centrally they are positioned, the more effective they will be at doing their job, so it makes sense to put it there

GS,
I fitted our sidekicks in exactly the position you are proposing and they work well there! :)

It's important when fitting the crossbar to bolt it through the hull with large washers internally as many have reported the wellnuts pulling out.
Leaning the kayak up against a wall so you can sit alongside it allows you to reach further in. You may need to use a ratchet to extend your reach.
Or you could add an extra hatch or two to enable better hull access as in the pic above!
Whe drilling a hole choose a bit a couple of sizes smaller than your bolt and screw the bolt in so you get a watertight connection.

Hello Stringy,

I like your additional hatches just behind the passenger seat on an Oasis.

What diameter hatch, make, model are they? I'm guessing 4-5 inches in diameter. 6" is likely too large in diameter.

Any recommendations on adding a hatch in the rear deck area to better access that area in an Oasis?

Best Regards,

John

G'Day John.
They are 4" hatches. Not sure of the brand but they are readily available at boat supply shops. They are a screw in fitting with an O-ring.
The rear deck hatch is a very useful project that HAR01DAV and TandemCyclist posted about. 8)

I mounted my sidekicks behind the back seat on my tandem Oasis,
and they work very well when sharing the river with speed boat wakes or when using the sail kit.
As for the extra hatches, I found that position was perfect for mounting a pair of 4" marine grade speakers,
with a battery in the front, a amp under the front seat & a MP3 in a water proof pouch, the mirage drive seems to
work so much better with a bit of beat.

Thanks for your replies Stringy and Montedane.

I'm going with at least one, possibly two 4" Beckson deckplate / hatches behind the passenger seat and will likely install a 5" deck plate at the rear of the aft deck to better access storage and rudder cables.

4" marine grade speakers... there... That's a rocking boat.

Cheers

Would behind front seat interfere with a sail mast?
