Post subject:  New fins are in

Matt,
I got my new fins today and put them on. The masts seem to be about a 1/4 too long. I made sure they were fully seated and teh fin is still about 1/4 inch from the base of the drive. Also, the notch for the chain drive is not lining up with my chain/sprocket. I moved the unit through it's full range and it doesn't bind anywhere. Should I be concerned? Should I grind a 1/4 inch from the bottom of the mast? Mine use the set screw, if that makes a difference. I made sure that they are in the right direction.

I'll be giving them a test run this weekend at LJ, I'll post my results.
Thanks.

Steve

You need to be sure you are using the correct recess for the set screw as shown in the instructions. Shoud be the opposite end from the recess and small hole used for older versions.

Due to the adjustable features, the mast should seem a little long as the fin does not ride tight against the sprockets when not fully tensioned.

I have inserted the correct end for the set screw and I measured the depth of the recess and marked that depth on the mast. The mast is seated to the full depth but there is still a 1/4 inch gap.

I can see the need for the gap to allow for tensioning the adjutment screw. I have the tension almost at max and there still is a noticable gap. I will see how it works this weekend and let you know if it there is any excess play in the unit.

We reviewed the fit with the factory manager and the design engineer.

This is the way they work. The length of the foot (across the sprocket) should not be too tight, if the mast was shorter and the fins pulled down against the sprockets, the fins would be too tight across the sprockets.
