I'm a biker and would like to "clip in" like on my bicycles. More power and less "clunky".

I've got the drive in my hands right now and they're not quite the same as a bike pedal. I did hear once that someone else has done this though.

Is this feasible and how can I remove the pedals if so. Anyone done this?

I have some shimano SPD's and shoes that I'd like to try.

I think the newest pedals are press-fit, but the older ones are threaded. You can probably call Hobie with the serial # of your drive and see which you have. 8)

The inner part of the pedals have a clear, soft plastic insert that covers something - haven't dug it out yet.

On the outside, there is a plastic cover which is easily removed. Underneath is a nut in a well that looks as though it could be turned with the right size thinwall socket. Appears to be about a 14 but not sure of this.

So the question is - Can standard bicycle pedals be substituted for the "new style" pedals and if so, what are the steps required?

It will be worth it incidentally:

1. Much more power is transmitted
2. More comfortable
3. Safe - properly set up bike shoes will "break out" with just a flick of the ankle

How about the Hobie rep weighing in here on how to do it?

The older pedals were an exact replacement for Bike pedals for use with the locking shoes, I don't think the new ones are, however I have not tried. what year is your boat....serial number?

Thanks,

If your drive is a newer one, it will require different crank shafts (the old ones). We have these on hand for this reason.

Call your dealer and tell them what you need, if they seem confused ask the to call the factory and they will be able to get all the parts together. Have fun Kayaking and let us all know how it goes with the shoes!

Thanks,
Brad Stephens

I know this is a VERY old topic but I have also been searching for the crank shafts which accept threaded pedals -- do we know if any are still out there?
