Adventure Twist-n-Stow Rudder Handle in Hand

Post subject:  Adventure Twist-n-Stow Rudder Handle in Hand
Anyone had the rudder raise / lower handle come off the spindle? While lowering the rudder, the PEM type threaded insert (for lack of a better description) which holds the handle set screw released allowing the handle to twist on the spindle and end up in my hand. OK, so I pressed the PEM type insert back into the handle, reassemble the lift mechanism/handle and tightened the set screw. So far so good until I actually tried to raise or lower the rudder and had the handle back in hand. Any recommendations to glue the set screw insert back into the handle?

We have had a few on outfitters do the same thing, I have just been giving the customers new handles, I have yet had a chance to get with the factory about the problem. We had the inserts coming out of the molded handle. We install new handles and have yet to have a problem with the new handles installed.

Set screw.

Sounds like the set screws were over tightened. That would suck the insert out of the plastic.

Thanks Brad & Matt. I agree that over tightening the set screw will back off the insert but to me that is the secondary problem. IMO, the root cause is that the excessive pressure required to raise and lower the rudder causes the insert to loosen in the 1st place. I have the large rudder installed which makes this even more of a problem. I'll look to get a new handle.

You may be right, but honsetly we have had little or no reports of failure of the handle.

When lowering the large blade I steer the rudderto the right hard as I pull the lowering handle. The steering motion gets the rudder mass moving. When raising you have to wiggle the steering to release to hold down notch as you raise.

Well add another to the list. Sat (7/29) I pushed my lever back to raise the rudder. I looked back after beaching and the rudder was still down, but not aground. I checked the direction lever and it was centered, the stow handle had rotated forward from full back. I pushed it back down again, and it came off in my hand and the shaft dropped inside the boat :cry:

I dropped the boat off at my dealer today for warranty service, since I've had it less than a month.

Got word today Hobie was replacing my Adventure hull. It has been leaking more than my wife's. Had the dealer check it after a 2 gallon day on the water. The hull had failed where the nose of the drive rests allowing water in.

Great service and turn around. They think I'll get my new one in time for my trip to Big Pine Key :D
