Hi. I have noticed that Hobie has changed their rudder turning lever assembly. Usually when Hobie makes an engineering change, it's for the better. My questions are...

1. Is this new lever nicer or sturdier or easier to "fix in the field" than the older set-screw set-up?

2. Can one retrofit this new lever assembly on an older boat (in this case a 2009 or 2010 Outback?). The "T" bracket below deck appears to be a bit longer and curvier than the older straight "T" bracket.

Yes, it is sturdier than the old style. My cover screw backed out and the lever came off, but the mechanism stayed in place. Easy to reinstall on the water with a 1/8" Allan head wrench (should carry one with you). A dab of Loctite Blue will keep it in place.

I think the new handle requires a new steering crank. The steering deck has changed also so make sure you have enough interior clearance for the new crank. 8)

If by "steering crank" you mean that "T" lever under the deck ...yes, that has changed as well and appears to be curved and a bit wider(?) between where the rudder cables connect.

I wonder if Hobie could tell me if the new handle and new lever below it can be retrofitted on older model Outbacks. The old system is just about impossible to fix without another person's help. Judging by your reply, the new system appears more robust and also fixable on the water. Thx!

I don't think the newer handle and changes that were on the 2011 models are available for the 2009, 2010 models. I fixed my handle on my 2010 Outback but your right it was a pain especially when doing it yourself.

You can put the new style handle on an older boat. The crank inside will need to be bent to fit your boat though which can be challenging. The parts are listed in the catalog on page 42, but here they are...

2011+ cranks:
Sport/Revo 11 - 81014001
Revo 13/Outback - 81016001
Outfitter/Oasis - 81017001
Adv./AI/TI - 88991281

handle - 81013001
screw - 8030126
sticker - 88991152
washer - 81385001
pin - 88991235
spring - H071

Keep in mind, the AI and TI use a larger handle now. The large handle (88991301) can not be put on an older boat. We modified the Adventure mold for the 2011 year to make space for this handle.
