Post subject:  Broken Rudder Pin Question

I have a 2008 Revolution kayak. As I was preparing to go out, I notice my rudder was not attached to the kayak. I saw that the pin that hold the rudder in place had sheared off even with the kayak hull.

A quick search showed me this is a fairly common event. I do have a couple of questions.

It appears to me that there is a brass nut molded inot the kayak to accept this pin which must be made of plastic or nylon. My pin had no visible slot to screw it into this nut. Am I missing something obvious?

Second, does anyone have a suggestion to help me remove the broken portion from the kayak hull? It is flush right now so I cannot get any tool engaged.

I hear there may be a spare pin in my storage hatch, I have not yet checked, Where can I buy a spare and should I get more than one if this is fairly common?

Thanks for the help,

Dante

I think it's more of a brass sleeve rather than a nut. You should be able to tap out the broken pin with a 1/4" wooden dowel and a hammer.

The pin (on mine, at least) has a barb on the end that will keep it from backing out once it's pushed in.

Dealer or many online resources (Austin Kayak, for example) should have the pin.
