I'm trying to figure out if there would be any negatives to mounting the aka forward of my seat (far enough that I can still lean into a stroke without contact)? The reason is for mounting two small, light weight (8 lbs) solar panels on them for the Engle fridge and electric drive.

That's how I mounted them on my Revo13. Worked out fine.

Thanks Tom. Any reason you chose forward, counter to convention?

I thought they'd be out of the way there, and they are. I ended up buying two center bars and mounting them both so I could try the Amas in both locations. Both work, fine, but I prefer having them up front.

I have since incorporated both cross bars and made my own Amas that run along the boat ala the Adventure Island.

I'd like to see a picture of that. I want mine forward because in that position the bar would cross just forward of the battery hatch so would only need short leads from the solar panels to the battery they will be charging. Mounted forward also keeps the rear recessed cargo well open and for forward picture taking I can if I want, have some piece of solar panel in the foreground of the picture.

Doesn't the forward mounting interfere with peddling and/or fishing?

It didn't on mine. But I have no idea how you fish.

The pedals just barely touch the cross bar. And that's only if I stretch my legs on the forward stroke. Before you mount your's this way, however, you may want to get in the boat and check everything for length and clearance.

So, you mounted the cross bar forward of the pedals...? Can you still mount a mast? Is there any problem working fish around the sidekicks?

Nothing has changed on the boat. I can still mount the mast. The sidekick Amas are not in the way of anything. I even used one of the crossbar mounts to fasten a redirecting eye for my home-made furling device.

The video linked below might be a way to mount/rig your solar panels between two non Hobie holders, Spring Creek Kayak Stabilizers . The two Spring Creek Kayak Stabilizer holders are shown starting at about 4 minutes into the video:
