Post subject:  Hobie Kayak Cart

Greetings all,

I am new to kayaking and new to this forum. I purchased a Hobie Outback and decided to make a cart.

What are your thoughts on this cart? Do you feel it is safe to transport an Outback without damaging the integrity of its hull?

It was fun to build and the cost was minimal. The wheels were $5.95 at Harbor Freight + threaded rod? + PVC pipe and a few connections? = minimal amount

There's more support for the kayak on your's than on the standard Hobie carts. If it holds together it should work great :) .

Looks good. Really Out of the Box thinking. Let us know if this design holds up bouncing over rocks, etc. with the Outback on it.

Lots of thought put into your project. Not to be negative, but PVC will fail on you at the worst time. UV will weaken the PVC in short order. It is not intended to carry a structural load. Maybe if you paint it, it will reduce the UV effect. Also using grade 40 rather than 20 would give it more strength.

All,

Thanks for your replies regarding the cart and your comments are well taken, especially from experienced kayakers. I have only kayaked / fished with my Outback one time and will be using it at least once per week. Hopefully the cart will hold up. Time will tell.

Best,
Tom
