Hi All,

Bit of a basic question but I was just wondering when you decide to install your mirage drive into the kayak? I.e, on dry land with it locked up or once your out on the water and its easy just to slide in? Dry land makes more sense to me but I was concerned it may scrap the fins during launch.

Thanks
Rueffy.

different strokes for different folks and different launch conditions. I launch into small surf, so I lay the mirage drive down and paddle out past the first break before dropping mine in.
Others may launch in calmer conditions with the drive in place, I know I do this when I launch inshore.

I always insert my MirageDrive after launch. I'm certain that I would screw up and forget they were up against the hull when I dragged the kayak down to the water  Plus, the PA is far to heavy for me to be lifting to insert the drive when on land.

I'm in AI's and TI's but I always put them in while unloading off the truck or trailer. If you're using a cart, and use the bungee'd hook to hold one Mirage drive pedal back, you shouldn't damage the fins.

To avoid sand and dirt from getting into the sprockets, I usually pop my drive in after I launch.

I fish fresh water 95% of the time. So, I usually place the MD in the drive hole and then take precaution to protect the fins. I will lash the peddle with the bungy cord to keep the fins close to the bottom of the hull.

If I have a long distance to travel with the cart I may leave the drive out until I get to the water then install before launching. I will pick up the front of the kayak and drag the yak out to six or eight inches and make sure the drive does not drag on the ground. I get in and make sure I have paddled out far enough for the drive to work without hitting the bottom of the lake.

Hope this helps.

I always launch, push the kayak into about 2 feet of water, drop in the drive, jump into the kayak and take off. That way I know that I won't damage the fins or the masts.
