I made a Bimini top for my Outback, it works great. The pic is on this site somewhere.

It's super lightweight aluminum and it starts off with full coverage at the seat area and then slowly narrows and stops between the front hatch and front handle area and it has a rounded front. It doesn't catch wind like you would expect it to but it keeps the sun away.
