I took possession of my 17 Outback last week and checking it out prior to a test ride. I'm wondering about the weirdly shaped black plastic foam blocks under the middle hatch. Are these shipping protection, support blocks or floatation blocks. I've asked on the FB Outback owners site and am getting conflicting answers.

I have a PA14 and I have heard that they are floor supports and also been told that they are Floatation.

Primarily safety flotation if the hull is breached in some way (same on our sailboats) This is a NMMA (National Marine Manufacturers Association) recommendation and also a requirement in Europe.

These can also be (as a secondary purpose) floor stiffeners for certain models like the Pro Angler.

Matt - Any way I can get the proper layout for the foam blocks? I bought a 2017 Oasis, and the (3) blocks are in the hull sliding around. Surely there is a correct method for jamming them into a "proper" position?

Thank you.

I can ask the factory, but think on some models it is not specific. I'll check Monday.

They just insert them into the hulls on most boats - so your Oasis, they're just random.... Only the Pro Anglers have them setup for floor structure and there's a couple parts in Outback model floors - however all others they're just in there loose.

I purchased a used 2015 Outback. Love the kayak. My question also concerns the foam blocks. Yesterday I notice a loose foam block in the front hatch. I didn't remove it but it looked to be 3" maybe 4" square approximately 3' foot long. Is there any place I can find where this block belongs?
