I appreciate the comprehensive reply, Roadrunner, from another owner with the same model. We have avoided long carries and realize we have missed some great adventures. We have kayaked from the Florida Keys to Lake Superior (and have seen another Hobie Mirage maybe twice in 14 years).

That was a great boat and we had some excellent adventures with it as well! The boat had good speed, good stability, and always brought us home when the weather turned sour! 8)

I think it was put there to hold the cart. It was obviously sealed at the top to keep the water out. It was only later that they discovered a way to extend the holes so the boat didn't sink! :lol:
