J-Hook Roof Rack for Hobie Outback?

Hi,

I'm going to be driving 4 hours to purchase a used Outback and a small bass boat from a friend. I have a 2017 Audi Allroad and I have a narrow (~22" wide) ski rack on the Audi crossbars that I actually use for my fly rods. This leaves about 25 more inches of crossbar width to put the Outback on. I really want to keep the fly rod holder up there because it prevents me from breaking them putting them in and our of the vehicle. For this reason, I cannot lay the Outback down on the crossbarsn due to its width of 33 inches.

I was going to use the Yakima JayLow, but the maximum kayak width it accommodates is 32" and I have heard people have issues with that one specific to mounting the wide Outback. Does anyone know of a J-Hook type roof rack that will accommodate the Outback?

You might get it to fit as is, depends on how wide the spread apart the bars are since. You can always get upgraded Thule X Bars and a fit kit - instead of using the factory rails... then you can go wider. That would be better than a J Cradle on stock bars. We recommend up side down storage and transport for the kayaks - this is so that you don't distort the hull. I bet that setup would cost you less too.. but again - you might get it to fit since the widest point of the boat is only in the middle - so you might get it to fit the stick setup, but my guess is wider X Bars are in your future.

Thanks. My factory bars are pretty narrow, so maybe wider x bars are the solution so I can lay it down next to the rod holders.

Do you typically recommend laying them straight on the x bars, or getting a saddle product to support the kayak?

Flat upside- down onto the x bars is best - not right side up with cradles... the easiest (and least expensive method too.. Bonus!) You can put the pads on the x bars - we offer some nice Hobie ones (we have aero style and regular in two different widths 24" and 36" in our catalog, talk to your Hobie dealer - we also have Hobie cinch straps)
