Does anyone use a handheld or portable GPS or a phone navigation app? Looking for suggestions.

Navionics Boating for me- works really well with the Lowrance elite ti and totalscan transducer on my Hobie TI.
Nothing quite like seeing your map/app get updated in real time on the bathymetry of where you are sailing/boating. Love it.

I wouldn't call it a navigation app per se, but I like PaddleLogger for it ease of use and low impact on the battery.

Garmin GPSMAP 78 Color Handheld GPS
The Garmin GPSMAP 78 was designed and built for the marine environment. waterproof construction and it floats.
I use my handheld to track my time and distance. After a fishing session I download my tracks to my laptop. and upload them onto Google Earth to view my trip.
the track also contains the time and date for each track point so I have the exact time and place I caught my fish. That, along with my tide table makes the basis for a solid logbook.

For tracking my trips and logging my waypoints for kayaking, hiking etc I really like GPS Tracks.
A lot is included without having to pay annual fees such with some other apps.

MotionX GPS is a full-featured tracking app for the iPhone. Use it all the time for my trips.
