So I just bought an Outback and would like to get a combination GPS / Fishfinder. I am basically looking for something that can store my route and something I can go back later and log my distance, time, etc.

I am not real familiar with how the chartplotters work. I know you can plot a course and navigate with them. But I am looking for more of a logger than a navigational planner.

Thoughts?

Thanks!!

The Hook2 5 SplitShot is a great unit, that's moderately priced and has all the functionality you're looking for:

If you play in tidal waters a GPS is a very valuable tool for ensuring that you take the shortest route to your planned destination and a chartplotter makes the whole experience a whole lot easier because it allows you to see the map detail rather than just a bunch of dots (waypoints).

My personal recommendation would be to not get one that has a very small screen if your eyesight is not perfect - otherwise you will have trouble seeing the detail without zooming in massively (which isn't ideal IMO) - on a kayak you tend to have the device installed at or near deck level which makes it tricky to move in close to view a small screen (unlike on a boat).

Just my $0.02 FWIW
