| Post subject: | Favored roof rack other than j-hook styles |
I'm in the market for a roof rack that holds the kayak either upside down or upright. (I would prefer upright due to my fishing accessory mounts. ). I don't prefer the j-hook styles because I want to load the kayak using a sherpack load assist or Thule 854 Water Slide Kayak Carrier Accessory Mat, I have a Hobie Sport that is just under 10 feet long. If you use such a rack what brand and model do you prefer? I will have bars on the top of the SUV to attach the rack to. Thanks! |

I have a Rev13 and VW Jetta. I have Thule cross bars that accept a variety of mounts for bikes, boats, skis, etc. When I purchased my Hobie I had never been in or on a kayak in life, in fact the first and last time I was in canoe was about 45 years ago at summer camp. So I had no experience with putting boats on cars. I started with a set of Thule J racks that attach to my cross bars. I put my boat in the racks and did not like the way they fit so I took them off again. The were well built and nothing wrong with them, I just did not care for them. What I came up with was large pool noodles (I prefer the Walmart brand) that I slid over the cross bars. I lift the boat onto the top of the car, strap it down to the cross bars and bungee cord it in the front and back of the car. I like the way it rides and it is easy to tie down. However I recognize that I am almost 60 and I may not always be able to life my boat directly over my head to load onto my car and so at that point I will get a trailer. If I was going to use my SUV I would probably build some kind of a roller for the rack. |

Thule Hullavator or strapping them upside down on the gunwales on Aero Bars. I use J-racks such as the Thule Hullaport-Pro folding style, but being vertically challenged and with bad shoulders, I invested in the Hullavator and wish I had done it sooner. Plus, I can easily remove the mechanized apparatus and keep the mounts on so it doesn' get banged up going into parking garages when I'm not using the racks. I have used various load assist devices from Yakima and Thule to slide them from the rear, or support half of the yak when loading from the side, but options are limited with aero bars. Good luck! |

I use Yakima Hully Rollers on the rear of my SUV cross bars and Yakima Deckhand saddles on the front crossbar. 16' Revo. |
