We have delivered MD 180 drives with chains or idler cables that are too tight. This was noted some time ago, but the issue persists in production or dealer/users are over tightening them.

A good test is to hold the drive in your hands and push one crank all the way forward while holding the other crank. If the drive naturally falls to the center, the tension is not too tight. Idler cables should deflect up to ¼” when pinched with regular hand squeezing force.

High tension is causing bearings to flatten and score the inside bearing races. This causes squeaks, clicks, and adds friction.

Is it better to err on the side of too tight or too loose?

Right now my 180MD KU passes the 2 handed back to center test with flying colors - but I'm not sure about the 1/4in with "regular hand squeezing force."

Should there be any resistance for the 2 handed test? Should it creep back to center or swing freely and even overshoot before finding center?
