Hello,

I purchased a Hobie Lanai for my wife. The kayak is great, but the molded-in handles aren't very deep, and it's hard to carry it on its side -- I can barely do it, and it's impossible for my wife. This means she cannot take it somewhere by herself because she's unable to lift it up onto our side-load rack.

I'd like to add side-carry handle/straps to make this easier. Has anyone done this successfully? If so, what did you use, and where did you install them?

My main worries are
1) Construction: the Lanai isn't as thick as, say, my Outback, and I'm worried that the handles might rip out of the plastic
2) Access: there's no hatch in the center of the Lanai, so I can't figure out how to get in there and install a nut or washer on the inside of the kayak, to hold the straps on.

If anyone has done this, I'd appreciate you showing me how.

Also, if there's some different option that doesn't involve installation (like some kind of side-carry bag or straps that wrap around the kayak temporarily) I would love to know about it -- a web search didn't turn anything up but maybe I'm using the wrong terms.

Thanks!
