Before I tear into my drive, what could be causing this to happen?

Basically, the left pedal has no drive/resistance because the FRONT fin is rotating while swinging right, and not locking in place.

The fins still flip when engaging forward and reverse. Looks like the fin shifting pulley is not locked in, and after taking a closer look, a locking tab is not protruding out enough to engage the notch in the fin pulley.

Flush and lubricate the locking parts. They are in the sprocket... where the line goes round the pulley. The line tensions and depresses some pins to release the fin. Maybe one is stuck?

I'm having the same problem with my drive. I have tried lubricating all around the mechanism but my fin still spins freely. It doesn't matter if the other one is locked in the Ford or the reverse position. Is there any way to access those pins to free them up?

Yes, you can disassemble the drive to fix it. I've had to do it before, it's a bit of a pain.
