Recently got this older model in great shape.

I know this is a more recreational model than fishing buy would like to add some bells and whistles like rod holders, additional hatches etc.

Question: What's the purpose of the cup-shaped depression in front of the seat? New models don't have it and typically there is a hatch right under knees.

I would like to cut it out and install a hatch for additional storage space. Would it seriously impact the rigidity of that area of the kayak?

Cup shaped? Cup holder. We found that the drain groove caused cracking, so discontinued that style. The hatch would be as stiff if you can cut the area (if flat enough).
