| Post subject: | Shourd lifespan? |
How often should shrouds (and other rigging) be replaced? I only sail my H16 a few times a year. Should it be based on times sailed, years, or condition of the shroud? If condition, what do I look for to see it if it damaged? |

Good question! I've taken posession of a 1989 Hobie 14 with all the original rigging. One shroud line was broken and the other kinked a bit. Other than that the other cables look fine. But,.... I do wonder... I'll be interested in hearing thoughts on this topic. |

Absolutely if you have kinked wires or see any snapped strands anywhere replace them. How the boat is stored is a big factor as well. Both mine are kept kept mast up on the beach and I get out all year round and often so I make a point of replacing the whole rigging every 3 years even if I don't see any obvious issues. It's not too expensive and defintely gives me some peace of mind. I use the regular 1/8" shrouds with regular swages rather than the heavier duty 5/32" shrouds as I had one of those break just inside the marine eye fitting, even though both the wire and marine eye were stainless steel and less likely to galvanically corrode it was obvious after to see it had corrosion inside that was hard to detect beforehand. I find it easier to detect any corrosion or damage there compared to the heavier duty 5/32" shrouds with the rolled marine eye. I think for the relatively low cost of new rigging better safe than sorry. |

At the first sign of wear like rust or broken strands. I’ll tell you from personal experience, it’s not fun to be demasted especially when there’s no one around to help |
