Hi, I picked up an old Hobie One 12 (or Holder 12). The seam between the deck and hull has come apart and the foam (which is waterlogged) is lose and rattles when you move the boat. At first, I wanted to separate fully the deck from the hull and gut the foam out and install new foam. However, it seems this is impossible because they are attached at the mast step, daggerboard and through the hardware at the transom. I think that the sole of the cockpit may also be attached to the hull. So the question is: 1. Should I just seal the seams with fiberglass and be done with it? everything else is in working order. I have the mast, boom, daggerboard, rudder and sail. 2. Should I cut openings from the cockpit, remove as much of the wet and lose foam as I can and then install new foam and repair the holes and seam with fiberglass? The boat feels heavy, but it is probably not much more heavy than normal. Anyone know how much it should weigh? Thanks, Victor |

The 12 hull was 125 lbs. You can add an access hatch and try to remove or at least dry the interior. Is the drain in the transom woking? Some seemed to be plugged. Not drilled deep enough to pass through the hull bonding material. |

Not drilled deep enough to pass through the hull bonding material. That's a great idea, I will do that. The drain in the transom is working, got all the water out, but the foams are lose and damp. I will install the hatch and get wet foam out through it, and replace with closed-cell spray foam (Versi-Foam). Do you know how many cubic feet I will need? Thanks, Victor |
