My H16 doesn't have the halyard pockets built into the trampoline so I coil the excess Main halyard and tuck it between the vertical part of the halyard and the mast.
An idea came to me and I wonder if its good.
What if I added a shackle/carabineer to the halyard that would allow me to separate the excess halyard and not have it coiled up against my mass. I would need to leave a few feet of rope between the wire part of the halyard and the shackle/carabineer so I could cleat the halyard to the mast. I could then leave the excess halyard on shore as I sail, then re-connect it to lower the main sail.

Is there any reason this is a bad idea?

Has anyone done this before?

If you don't have a pocket for your Main Halyard, what do you do with it?

i did the same as you currently do on my old 14. The best reason I can think of not to have a removable halyard is because in conditions where you decide you need to drop your main quickly, you'll have one more thing to try and do beforehand, which could lead to capsize etc.

I was thinking about this on my 14t last night. I usually cleat the halyard then wrap the rest around the crossbar on either side of the mast. I figure that way it shouldn't ever de-mast.
