Post subject:  What is it and can I save it?
I ran across this hobie in an empty lot and am currently trying to contact the owner to buy it from them. Other than a tag on the mast that says hobie cat 57980 I do not know what kind of hobie it is. I am new to the hobie thing but I really want to get this and fix it up. Thanks for any info you all can provide.

There is no information connected to mast serial numbers that relate to model.

Length? Maybe look at a few older models:

The easiest way to identify it is by its boards or lack of. If it has daggerboards that slide up and down, it's likely one of the 18 models. If it has pivoting centerboards, it's a 17. If the hulls have no boards, and are sort of banana shaped with the trampoline set up on pylons above the hulls, it's a 14 or 16. Measure the hull length to be sure.

It's possible but unlikely it's another model altogether. If it's abandoned in a lot, it's likely one of the older models I listed above.

Just take a picture of the boat and post it to the forum. There are plenty of folks here that can ID the model if we see it.

sailsmith, if you're new to "the Hobie thing" and/or sailing in general, you may want to steer clear of a Hobie 20. They are very powerful and fairly complex racing boats that aren't really suited to beginners. In fact, they intimidated quite a few seasoned racers during their heyday. That's not to say the 20 isn't a great boat (it is, I raced one for about 10 years), but there are better boats out there to learn on if you're new to beach cats.

I am a very experienced sailor and am currently 14 years into my Coast Guard career. I own and have owned many sailboats and windsurfers. I have bareboated many 40'+ multihulls over the years and have always wanted a speed machine in the multihull family. I think i could still fix this up to sailing condition and as long as I plan it right and keep a close eye on the weather I should be able to ease my way into getting comfortable with this. There is a group of guys near me that keep 4 or 5 beach cats on the beach and I will probably link up with them for some assistance/info. Thanks for the warning and wish me luck. Ha

Sweet! A 20'! Are you getting it cheaply? I passed up on a 20 with custom wings some years back, still kicking myself.

So I was able to acquire the hobie 20 but it is in very rough condition. I am not sure where to start. Anyone have or know where I can find a rigging diagram or plans for the runner lay out and dagger board dimensions. I am going to have to do some fabricating but plan on trying to save the ol gal. Thanks all for any info you all can provide.

Make sure the hulls are good and solid before spending hard earned cash on fixing up anything else, from there the world is your oyster....
