Just took delivery of our "new" 2014 T2. In setting the mast, we found significant mast rake even with the forestay/furler connection and both shrouds on their tightest/lowest hole. There is still a little play in the rigging, but no room to tighten any further at this point. I would estimate there is 15-20 degrees mast rake. We're going sailing this afternoon to see how she handles, but curious what others experience with rake on their boats.

15 to 20 degrees? Something is terribly wrong. Look at the Hobie catalog photos of the T2 - you'll never see more than maybe 3 to 5 degrees of rake. I don't think you could stand the weather helm at 15 to 20, if you could even keep the mainsail clew off the tramp deck.

I had to shorten my jib/forstay 9.5in to get my rigging tight, I started at 6in but it was still loose. Now I have full adjustment both ways.

Thanks for the feedback...

Buxton, how did you shorten your forestay? I'm already on the lowest hole with the clevis pin.

I had to cut the wire shorter and re-swage it . First I cut off the originals at the top of the short cable where it connects at the mast.
Then I installed new crimp collars on the cable, reusing the original loop support. Like I stated, I shortened it 6in, it was tight but not adjustable so I went another 3.5in (9.5 total) so now if I'm in the top hole of forestay adjuster, I'm in the top hole of my shrouds = max rake forward, and how I like to sail for more lift on our small lake. If I'm in the bottom hole of forestay, I can lower the shrouds for power when I go to Erie and have waves.

Buxton,

Thank you for the guidance on shortening the forestay to correct severe mast rake. Not sure why Hobie would provide a forestay that's clearly too long?

From what I can tell, the 14' to 15' model years they were switching from a normal jib (Tattoo) to the furler. I got parts for both in the kit that came with it. If the boat was set up by the dealer, they should have fixed it before delivery and you could take it back and have them correct it. I took mine off the lot with just the hulls bolted together and tramp laced up.
