I read somewhere that the T2 mast profile (the shape of the tube) is different from the Getaway. I'm curious if the mast profile is unique to the T2 or if it is the same as another boat, such as the H16 or 18? Any info would be much appreciated.

Since I didn't get any answers (yet) I figure I will explain why I am asking.

I am considering keeping my boat outdoors in mast-up storage and I am concerned about the warning of keeping the comp tip out of the sun. I can't think of any way to do that with the mast up, so one idea would be to keep my eye out for a one piece aluminum mast that I could use. Hobie masts occasionally come up on craigslist and it would be good to know what I am looking for.

Otherwise, I am interested in other's thoughts about protecting the comp tip in outdoor storage, and whether this is something I should even worry about. As always, any help is much appreciated.

Give the fiberglass a light sanding, and wipe clean with a rag dampened with acetone. Then mask off the luff track and the aluminum parts of the mast and shoot the comptip with your favorite rattle can spray paint to protect the fiberglass. After a few years of sun exposure, the paint will break down and you'll have to sand it off and repeat, but it's not a big deal - a 20-30 minute job. Better than buying a whole other mast.

The T2 uses the Hobie 16 mast extrusion.

Thank you srm and Matt - very helpful. I will try the comp tip painting trick and at least if my mast has issues I'll know what I am looking for.

1. Spray the comp tip with 303 UV protectant.
2. If you don't use the halyard for a jib snorkel, you could make a sleeve to cover the comp tip and haul it up. Even if you do use a jib snorkel, you might be able to do the same thing with some careful and clever rope work.

Hi all. Brand new to this forum. I have a T2 and sail at least twice a week. Lucky enough to have it stored on the beach mast up. This is the first I've ever heard about keeping comp tip out of sun. It's been out in elements since January 2018! Since I am not always able to fresh water rinse it, the boat is showing some wear -- but what can happen to the mast? I'd hate to find out the hard way! Thanks much.

Not sure how you'd manage to get the sleeve hoisted above the mast tang....

The UV will eventually break down the fiberglass. The outside of the comptip will start to fade and eventually small fiberglass splinters will develop on the outside (you'll notice this when you handle the mast, you'll feel small bits of fiberglass sticking in your hands). Over enough time, the comptip could fail. Note that there are tons of comptips on boats that are 30+ years old that look bad but are still sailing, so it takes a long time for the mast to break down, if it ever does. But the best course of action is to cover the mast (either with a fabric cover or with paint) to block out sunlight.

Welcome to the club seaside. I thought I saw a note about keeping the comp tip out of the sun in the owner's manual, but I just checked again and I don't see it in there.

Hmm, true! I'm cogitating on that predicament now...

Thanks for the info and the welcome! I use the halyard on the jib snorkel. I have an extra snorkel from my 14 turbo but the odds of me trying to rig ropes up the mast -without hitting the tang, are remote. I'm not good with stuff like that. I think I will leave it as is...at least for a while? The only time I am near the comp tip is when we capsize, but I will try to take a look at it when that happens next!
