Hey there all, I am considering getting my son into sailing. He is currently 14 years old. Any recommendations? Beginners tips? Anything I should know?

Are you a sailor? I might suggest you both taking a sailing course if not. Sailing is an awesome family activity! If you are a sailor... take him sailing.

US Sailing offers some information: http://www.ussailing.org/ They have a link on their front page "Start Sailing" http://www.startsailing.org/ Which has tons of entry level information.

How to get involved in sailing may depend on your locale. Some areas have easier access. Some yacht clubs offer youth sailing classes regardless of yacht club affiliation. Some areas have sailing schools and programs... in San Diego I would recommend Mission Bay Sports Center which has summer sailing programs. Rental places often offer sailing lessons. Do you have a local Hobie dealer? Maybe contact them for some local knowledge.

If it were me, I'd be looking for a youth sailing program. When I did things with my kids, it was more likely to be successful if they had friends involved too.

Hey guys, thanks for the quick responses. I have a little experience of heading out with my father. Perhaps the best option will be getting him involved with kids his age. Will look into it further. Thank you again.

Hey guys,
thanks for the links! I'm looking for a program for my daughter too!
She is 14 and I want to start sailing too but I think she would rather learn it with people her age!
We moved to Sabbia Beach about 4 months ago! When we both are better I think it is awesome to go sailing as a family! My wife got some experience from her youth but she should update them too I guess :)
I'm checking out the links right now!
