I've got an SX now... (in addition to the 14 turbo)...

Have you seen the new Iron Man movie... he tries on his suit... jets around the sky... lands... and says...

"yeah, I can fly".

Well that's kind of how it is on the 18SX heeled 30 degrees over when you're 8 feet up over the water on that wing... walking it back and forth to keep the other wing out of the water!

Whoo hoo I'm an 18 convert.. but the 14 is still a little sports car.

So... how about them sails... my mylars are shot... think my mast it taller and standard 18 sails won't work... help please.

You got that right. I don't know if Hobie still makes sails for the SX. If they do, they're likely to be $$$.

You could try Chip Buck at Whirlwind Sails.

Tiger ST main will fit it. Listed at $1675 new but I'm sure you can find one used. A little adjustment to the head and tuning the mast and your done. Well, maybe add some downhaul to control the sail and shorten your boom. The Tiger sail will last much longer than the SX sail if both are cared for properly. Chip at Whirlwind does make a nice squaretop main in many colors, the Tiger is smoke or white.

2300 is for the STX sail. He has a comptip and the STX is too large a head on the wiggle tip. The ST will flex it off more than I like, the STX will really flex.

Yes, but the squaretop cannot be as large as the newer F18 sails. You will not get all of the performance from it because of the tip but it does make a difference in lighter air. Also not class legal for SE or SX 18.

wow harsh words.
Jeremy has always been helpfull to me with the tiger, 18, and 14. I think that little section was taken out of context . If you put a chevy 350 in a 32 ford are you going to ask ford for the timing settings on the engine ? No you'll ask chevy. Thats what he was saying in that event.
But thats not my argument.
Can't we all just sail along?
But if your going to go square top chip at whirlwind makes a good product and has made several for the 18 in dacron or pentex.

Hey Rob,

Is there any "active" H18SE Hobie Points Racing near you currently???

Maybe you should consider locating a used Standard H18 mast and converting the boat over to a "SE" model. You would then be able to compete in the H18 Class at the Hobie Points Regattas. It most likely will be easier to locate used H18SE sails then H18SX sails as there is alot more of the "SE's" out there. I believe (Jeremy can confirm this) that the "SE" sails are significately cheaper then the "SX" sails from the factory and maybe with-in your price range. You may find a servicable used mainsail .... but I would suggest purchasing a new jib ... a "new" jib makes a BIG difference.

Frankly wings are wings ... for the H18SE w/ either Magnum or SX wings or w/o wings, the portsmouth handicap number does not change, but the different size sticks do change the handicap number for "Open Class" racing.

Ya, I remember a day years ago .... the second day of the 3-day Down the Bay Race on my H18Mag, we were behind because of some poor tactical decisions .... in the afternoon the wind picked up to 12-15kts w/ 3-4' seas, and the sky went black .... we double trapped off the wings ..... and we turned her loose .... leaving a trail of spray (3) panels high behind us, we started to run down the fleet ..... WOOF, WOOF, WOOF .... did she run that day ... and us, we were dry above the waves, my partner Glenn smoking cigarettes as we passed Nacra's .... H16's ..... and then some H18's .... we finished well that day ....

I love my H18 .... with or without wings
