Can anybody tell me in what position the vinyl bushings that fit inside the lower rudder casting should be in? These are the bushings which ride inside what I will call the upper rudder pin hole and the lower rudder pin hole in the casting (new style rudder castings). The previous owner of my boat had the upper bushing inserted into the top of the upper rudder pin hole which allowed the bottom of the pin hole (casting) to ride directly on the gudgeon. This also allowed the whole rudder assembly to ride slightly lower on the gudgeons which causes the upper rudder casting to rub the top of the hull during extreme left or right rudder movement.

My question is, shouldn't the bushings on both the upper and lower rudder pin holes be installed so that portion of the bushing protruding from the casting is sitting between the casting and the gudgeons? In other words, the upper bushing installed from the bottom side of the upper pin hole (so that it rides on top of the upper gudgeon) and the lower bushing installed from the top of the lower pin hole (so that it rides below the lower gudgeon).

I tried it the above mentioned way but it was very difficult to "stap" the lower castings onto the gudgeons due to lack of clearance. I actually had to loosen the gudgeons to provide enough play to "stab" the rudders.

Sorry for the long post but while on the subject of gudgeons, how are these attached inside the hull? Are there backing plates attached inside of the hulls or are these just self tapping screws?
