Hi all,

I just bought a 1990 H18 SX with wings in a club far away from my club (~90km) , I need to take it back by sea route.... and i am thinking to mount a 15 hps motor on its back.

Do you think it is OK ? I am afraid it would damage the boat..

looking forwards your advice, thanks.

Where was it? Macau? 8D Sounds like a lot of fun sailing it back, friend! You just need someone else with a boat to go along for safety reasons. Maybe get TWO people to sail. You could probably cover the distance in 5-10 hours depending on the winds. :D

Hi Jim,

It is locate at the Hong Kong Hobie Club (Southern side of Hong Kong) right now, and the club that I am joining is locate at Northern side of Hong Kong. The route is a bit offshore :!: and a big semi-circle of ~80km be more accurate than the 1st post)

I am planning to SAIL her back this Sat & Sun with 1 or 2 friends, and camping on the beach (which is locate in the middle of the route).

Since it is the longest journey that I have ever been sailing, I am quite excited :D .... and worry :? ..... about it.....

I would like to seek more advice here:
1. What should I prepare for such a offshore 80km route?

thanks thanks

I'll be up-front and say I've never sailed my Hobie more than a few hundred yards from any shore, but if I were going to sail offshore the first thing I'd do is inspect the boat (especially the rigging!) and make sure it can physically make the trip. Look at every inch of the forestay and shrouds and if you see any problems then I'd replace it.

Then also be sure to bring life jackets (of course), a waterproof marine radio to call for help if you have problems and/or a cell phone in a waterproof bag. (I learned earlier this year you don't even have to take the phone out of the bag to talk! Hehehe) Also probably bring two paddles in case the wind dies or does something weird. And maybe a leatherman-style multi-tool and some extra rope. Extra rope is always good.

Tang de ho ho wan-an! (Ngo gong-de mmm ho-ah.) (Pin yin: Ting chi lai hao wan!) :)

Jim has some very good advice. When I was making my longer trips offshore I always brought a wetsuit in case I ended up in the water. I don't know how warm the water is in Hong Kong, but think of what you would need if you have to spend an extended period in the water.

Well I think I can figure out the rough idea of what to bring:

1. Tools (for minor fixing)
2. Personal (PFD, wetsuit, ....)
3. Camping equipments
4. ropes
5. ropes
6. ropes.
7. paddle
8. emergency tool, SOS...

u forgot: food, water, make sure a long buoyant rope(for the tow of shame), I suggest a knife (u never know in a capsize, if someone got stuck under the tramp:S). Sunscreen. Whenever I sail, I also carry a few shackles, a broken tape(music tape on the front ALWAYS helps).
