Hey guys, I'm fixing up my new-used 1980 18, and am curious about these "anchor plates" in the catalog. They're not on my boat, but I've heard them mentioned around this forum. I believe they should be bolted to the ouside of the hulls just under where the shroud anchor comes through the hull deck, I guess to provide a stronger anchor point. Is this correct? Assuming it is, do I really need them? The boat's been just fine without them for 25 years now. I do see a few very tiny stress cracks up underneath where one of the shrouds anchors, but they apppear to be only in the gelcoat, and not very deep at all. I sail on Conesus Lake (smallest of the finger lakes), so it's not like I'm crashing around in the surf or pushing the limits of the boat at all. Any thoughts? |

My Bad, I should have done a search before posting (sorry). I've read all the relevant posts I could find, but still have some questions. According to the Hobie 18 "timeline", the early 80's were pretty solid years (after the initial fixes, and before the hulls were lightened, wings added, etc.). Do these early 80's boats (1980 in particular) still need the anchors? If so, could I get away with the 4 anchor setup? (one on the outside of the front crossbar on each side, and one on each shroud? Or do they need to be on the rear crossbars as well? What about the insides of the crossbars? What about the bow tangs? Do they need to go here as well, or is the three-bolt setup sufficient here? It looks like the anchor replaces the metal plate that I'm currently bolting to, rather than the plate fitting into the anchor... Correct? Finally, the anchor plate kit in the Hobie Catalog (part number 64100001) goes for ~$30. Is that for a single anchor (plus bolts, nuts, etc.), a pair? That'll add up awfully fast at $30 per... Sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to tear a shroud anchor through my nice new (used) hull come spring. Thanks a lot. |

I would do the shroud plates on any Hobie 18 that does not have them. The 64100000 Kit is a pair. You only need one set. Even in lighter air and lake sailing you should do the shroud kits. The rig can slap and jolt the connection to failure. There is no bow tang issue on any model 18. No need for the cross bar plates till 1984 and later models when the glass layup was changed. |

I checked and my 80' H18 does not have the plates. Since I will upgrading everthing I will add as well. Let me know if you need and more H18 '1980' discussion. Likwise I'm a learn'n also ! Keep in touch! |

With the age of the boats and many damaged or scrapped out each year check for parts on the used market. You can usually find a pair for about 50% the price of new. With that note never buy used wire rigging. |

$30 a piece kinda hurts. I have a few used sets that I would sell for $30 a pair. I believe I have all nuts and bolts, too. You might need to do some cleaning on them because of the sealant used, but it beats forking out a lot of money. Dan [email protected] |
