Post subject:  capsized & turtled, shroud extenser released & mast

I experienced a "disaster" yesterday.

It was my first sail of my newly bought H18SX/wings, we capsized and then I climb to the top hull to release the shroud extenser, and then she quickly turtled in 1 minute... and then what made things worse was the mast came out and float...

we hardly being towed back to the beach and righted she upright, tied all mast, boom...... on the tramp and than back to our club... at night...

I have some question that want to seek your opionion, please...

1. Regarding the mast came off, i guess it was due to the release of the shroud extenser, is it? or due to a loose rig?

2. Regarding the flotation of the mast, is it abnormal for the boat to turtled just within 1 minute after capsized?

3. I have a smallest size of the Hobie mast float, is it enough to float the 18 if I mounted it on the mast top?

Please help... thanks.

It was really an unforgettable FIRST sail....

Post subject:  Extenders

1) The extenders should have another cable to keep the mast captive. Without that the mast may pop off the step.

2) Even if you do not climb up on the mast, you can sink the mast and sail. Depends somewhat on the wind direction. If the mast is pointed down wind it will sink like a rock. If the mast is upwind if usually will not sink... assuming that the boat is drifting downwind.

3) If you can adapt the float to the 18 mast, it should do the job.

Post subject:  instructions for shroud extenders - follow carefully

the instructions for the shroud extenders show the "captive" cable clearly. as a matter of fact I am not sure how you would hook them up or use them otherwise. are you using the upright solo shroud extenders from the Hobie catalog? http://static.hobiecat.com/2010_archive/support/pdfs/18_19.pdf ?

oh yes, i saw a 3rd cable at the catalogue which ii was missing in my 18, is that captive cable install at the mast to the front beam? does anyone have the instalaltion manuel?

I think it was due to the mast detached from the mast base when the boat is turtled.
