Post subject:  Great (sad) Story

How many of you have done this? Hope I'm not the only one... So I buy a Hobie 18 last summer. When I pick up the boat I comment on where to put the daggerboards for the trip home. He says..." oh, they are fine as is. The bungee cords will hold them in place." So the novice who bought the boat (me) assumes seller knows his stuff. At around 60+ mph on the feeway home I hear this grinding sound but assume its a truck traveling near me so no big deal. But it won't go away so I pull over to find both boards in the down position. One had about 4 inces ground off the bottom and the other about 3 gone. End of story. Start of big repair job!

Before fixing the boards find out if they are still class legal. You may have accidentally discovered a racing advantage.

I'd suggest some new to you boards. I have repaired boards in the past but it makes them even heavier, they are heavy enough when new. Boards are readily available online. I feel sure Dan Berger in Va Beach has some or Trey Brown in Raleigh, NC.

I keep them in my trunk.

I have also bought a spare set for $100 on eBay. They come up regularly. It's always nice to have a second set just in case. I would suggest you buy a new to you set and worry about repairing your current ones this winter.

DM,

FYI - There is currently a set of H18 daggerboards on Ebay (item #8072415623). The sellers starting bid price is a little steep in my opinion at $200 but it all depends on how bad you want them! Bidding ends on June 11th.

Yet another set of H18 daggerboards on Ebay this morning (item #4647495662). Seller is selling one board but claims he will sell the other at whatever the closing bid on the one board is. Current bid is $9.99.
