In evaluating a Hobie 18 magnum in the mid-80's; weren't there major problems with soft spots in the hulls? What were the other big problems from these years?

Soft spots can be a problem for any production year of any model Hobie. It's the nature of the construction. The skins can delaminate from the core if the hull is overstressed.

What you're probably referring to is the "red glue" boat era where Hobie lightened the construction of the Hobie 18. Boats built between about 1984 to 1988 should have the front crossbar area reinforced with a fiberglass patch and the upgraded stainless steel anchor plates which helps to keep the hull connected to the deck.

When evaluating a used boat, you should look up under the hull flange at all of the crossbar connections (front & rear, inner & outer) to inspect for signs of cracking or damage.

The "redline" hulls did not have major problems with soft spots. They were built significantly lighter than the previous years, they are not quite as strong. They have been known to break off at the front beam, this is especially true if the anchor plates have not been upgraded. There is a patch thay can also be installed to streghten them more.

When you look at one of these boats, look for soft spots anywhere as you would with any other hobie. Look for major cracking around the front beam. Keep in mind that most boats will have cracks in the gelcoat in this area which is not a big deal.

No - South Florida. Always wanted to sail on the west coast - may trailer there in spring when boat is tuned the way I want it.
