Hi there,

a friend of mine take an old H18 for free.
The boat miss of the whole rudder system and of the main sail.
I have a spare whole rudder system from my H16 and a mainsail also from my 16 can he use it ?

I bet you can make the rudder system work.

The main sail is a no, if you had an h16 boom as well maybe you could figure something out but it would not be pretty

You could make it "work", but you would need to:

1) Re-position the gudgeons on the transom and modify the deck lip (drill hole, cut away part of it).
2) Shorten the tiller arms.

Even then, there might be some interference with the mainsheet / traveler and the tiller crossbar. The rudders would also be higher, with less blade in the water.

As proof, here's an overlay of the two rudder systems on an 18's transom:

You'd need to add another gudgeon in the middle of the transom and hope the hole through the deck lip can support the upper part of the rudder system, because there's no space to put a gudgeon up there - and the backing plate probably doesn't extend that high anyway. The rudder would probably interfere with the drain plug if you didn't redrill it to rake it aft - which would mess up the helm.

Like I said, you *could* do it, but it would create a whole host of problems to be solved.

And what about the Jib ? can i use the h16 jib on his H18 ?
Without the jib furler obviusly...

Probably not - the jib halyard on the 18 is far too small to withstand the unsupported luff of the H16s jib. You would need to replace the halyard and install a block/cleat on the mast similar to a 16s.

Wow...I'm totally impressed with that overlay graphic Matt posted....beautiful illustration. It is so good I'd think that would have been enough to discourage the poster........Always amazed that people will spend mega hours trying to make something goofy like this work...when you can buy a complete used 16 in good working order for under $1500 anywhere in the country. Just sell all the pieces you have and go buy one real boat...REALLY then you will have something worthwhile.. The rudders are only the beginning of your nightmares...... when you are done with all that work you will most likely end up with something you can't sail or sell.

It really wasn't that hard. 17 rudder system (same as 18's) I had drawn last spring as an exercise to sharpen my Illustrator skills and the rest came from the parts catalog. Getting them all the right scale was the hard part, but since the rudder is the same, that wasn't too hard either.

But you're right about creating a monster.

But again sometimes people don't have another $1500 but a cheap/free 'deal' at hand.
Better to sail something and get experience both with a boat and the challenge of maintaining it or making it work...

Or maybe these people leaves in country ( Italy ) where is almost impossible find spare for H18 a good prices.... :)
I also play Ice hockey here and i have to buy almost everithing in canada or USA..
maybe i have to change something in my life... i'll play soccer :P
