Post subject:  1987 H-18 Questions...

Friends of ours have purchased a 1987 H-18 with Magnum style wings. We are helping them out to restore it and get her into sailing condition.

Her HIN is CCMC1058F6887 (with the 7 noticeably larger than the rest of the numbers and more "freehand-ish." ) She also has a "Coleman" sticker on the starboard transom.

From a search here -->(viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1155) we can see that she is built by Coast Catamarn, is an 18, built in June, and is model year 1987, or so we think?

We are wanting to know if these hulls are the unmodified red-line hulls, or if by the HIN we can identify if these hulls had the reinforcements that began sometime in 87 or 88...

Looking into the access port at the crossbar area, there does not appear to be any reinforcements noticeable. There are several thin areas where ambient light shines through readily, and today we discovered crush zones where the rear rollers have crushed in an area on the bottoms of both hulls.

They plan to sail this boat in the ocean, with wings, with 2 adults, and three children ages 10 to 16 on board.

How best can I advise them and offer them cost effective help to make their experiences safe and fun?

Thanks!

Do some searching, this topic has already been discussed extensively on the forum. In summary, there are two upgrades that were done to the hulls built in the mid 80's onward.
The first is a heavy fiberglass patch that was added to the inside of the hulls on both sides of the hull. The patch is placed over the "hump" in the crossbar anchor area. If the reinforcement is there, you will see it by looking through the port hole. If it isn't there, you should add it.
The second modification is the upgraded front crossbar anchor plates. These anchor plates have four bolts that bolt directly through the side of the hull. If these are not in place, they should also be added.
These two mods are required to bring your 18 hulls up to full strength.

Thanks for the reply, I have found these but was also wondering about the possible solutions for the crush zones at the rear hull botoms where the rollers contact the hulls.

I understand the procedures for installing the reinforcement kit along with the patching at the front crossbar. I read in another post, through the search feature, that Hobie began to patch these hulls beginning in 1987.....Was wondering if this HIN had the patching or not since it is a 1987 model.

Will this boat be safe without these mods for the above mentioned family just cruising or is it only needed for racing, or needed in all circumstances?

You should check the Hobie Hotline archives "This Old Hobie" articles for instructions on doing fiberglass repairs. One thing to consider is that you could install a porthole behind the rear crossbar. This would give you access to fix the crushed hull from inside and would also allow you to install the upgraded crossbar anchor plates at the rear crossbar. A lot of people do this on older boats to make the hulls even stronger.

Rather than trying to determine if your hulls have the reinforcement patch based on serial number, do something much easier - just look in the hull. If the hulls have the reinforcement patch, there will be a heavy piece of fiberglass, about 5" wide, laminated to the inside of each hull at the inboard and outboard front crossbar anchor points.

Impossible to say other than the boat has lasted for the past 25 years without issue, so likely it is ok. What I would highly suggest you do is to look under the hull lip at all four front crossbar anchor points and look for cracks. If there is cracking that is more severe than simple hairline crack in the gelcoat, then you absolutely need to repair and reinforce these areas of the hull. In any case, there is no good reason not to do these upgrades. They are easy, cheap, and make the hulls a heck of a lot stronger.

Thanks very much for the advice.....

If the patch is very obvious, its not there on this boat, and there is a lot of light coming through the glass at the crossbar mounting locations on the hulls.

I will advise my friends to get the reinforcing kits and have the glass-work done on the hulls as well as install inspection ports aft of the rear crossbar to fix the crush zones where the rollers have crushed in the bottom of the hulls.

Good call on the hotline archive suggestion, its been a while but I do remember doing a butterfly patch on a 1984 model back when Hobie furnished the crossbar reinforcement kits on warranty...

Thanks again very much for your help srm....

Time to get to work!
