I am helping a guy with his recently purchased 18 rig his outhaul car. I did mine and really dont recall this issue. He has a 78D hull ID and sail # 839! Thought that was pretty cool to see a first generation 18. Anyway - the shock cord spec is 7 feet. When we run this cord thru his outhaul jam cleat and up to the mast rotator cleat to tie off (both ends) there is way too much tension. I noticed that the parts manual seems to show 3 jam cleats on the boom. Cant be right - right? He had a third jam cleat so we put it mid boom and tied the shock cord ends off to it and it is fine now. Other than having what I am pretty sure is a useless third jam cleat. I know I tied my cord ends off at the mast rotator cleat, I must have just used a longer shock cord. |

The original Hobie 18s had a "barberhauler" system on the boom which allowed you to pull the jib sheets inboard. The system was quickly discarded. The third cleat on your boom is the remenants of this system. sm |
