I am helping a guy with his recently purchased 18 rig his outhaul car. I did mine and really dont recall this issue. He has a 78D hull ID and sail # 839! Thought that was pretty cool to see a first generation 18.

Anyway - the shock cord spec is 7 feet. When we run this cord thru his outhaul jam cleat and up to the mast rotator cleat to tie off (both ends) there is way too much tension. I noticed that the parts manual seems to show 3 jam cleats on the boom. Cant be right - right?

He had a third jam cleat so we put it mid boom and tied the shock cord ends off to it and it is fine now. Other than having what I am pretty sure is a useless third jam cleat.

I know I tied my cord ends off at the mast rotator cleat, I must have just used a longer shock cord.

The original Hobie 18s had a "barberhauler" system on the boom which allowed you to pull the jib sheets inboard. The system was quickly discarded. The third cleat on your boom is the remenants of this system.
