No. You don't reduce the amount of line on the tramp. Basically, you half the amount of line right where the pig tail is. Whatever the length of the pigtail is, that's the amount of line you reduce and that's where it is reduced. The amount of line on the tramp is the same, the amount of line you have to pull through the blocks during a tack is exactly the same. So you really just eliminate about 2 feet of static line from the boat. It ain't much, but it's still something, so that's why racers do it.

I don't really think this applies to the 18.. but I'll throw it out there anyway.

On my 16 I have the jib sheet 'cut in two' like is described here.. Then I have each side tied to the Traveler line for that side.. This allows easy traveling from the trapeze.

VERY helpful for rounding A mark when it is really blowing.

Another possible pigtail benefit - Someone told me once the reduced mass hanging off the jib clew allows a little-bit better sail shape heading downwind in light air. I'm sure this one is arguable (and perhaps negligible) as well.

No ... it ain't !!!!

Here in the light airs on the Chesapeake in the summer every little gram of wieght you can eliminate is important off the clew !!!!

Make "Pigtails" from 1/8" specta/vectra ... approx 32" lg ... tie to clew .... tie both leads of the pigtail together 4" down from the clew .... tie jib blocks onto pigtail ends ...

The jib will "tack" through much better ....

I use 1/4" Yale Conception as my Jib Sheet ... but have been told by APS it's no longer availible ... so Salsa next maybe ... or Marfolli ...
