They were from Hobie Europe. Not really a Hobie 18. I believe it was a called a "Hobie 18 Pacific" (not the Hobie Pacific you can find pictures of via Google). Makes sense since Rich is working at a resort in the Philippines for the next few months.

The Hobie Pearl is a similar adaptation of Tiger hulls.

It's not really a big change - if you're working with the original molds and building the boat from scratch. They probably used Hobie 17 molds/parts to make them.

Major change if you're working with an existing boat.

Yes Matt is right they are HCE boats. This place will have 7 boats (all Hobie) ready in the next couple months. 2 H-18 Pacific, 1 H-18, all with custom self tackers, ST Tiger style mains, and spins. 2 Tigers with the ST sail and STX sail available. And 2 Wilcats 2010 models. Also there will be sea kayaks and parasailing ect. available probably a year off now. We are starting training with the guides Monday morning. Only problem is all the sails will be smoke Pentex Blue wasn't available.

Sounds like a nice fleet you're building there, Rich! Please post some pics of the tiger-style mains and self tacker setups when you can. Also, I'm wondering what the purpose is of the tramp loop you see directly inboard of the center board lifter?

I sail a 18 with retractable centreboards. Here in Europe quite a few HC18 were build that way (but way more with the classic dagger boards) I like my retr. centreboards a lot : they never get in the way and they slide in their boxes if you should forget them.
The loop on the tramp is probably to fasten a cord to keep the spi-sack (old style without snuffer) secure on the tramp.
To put things right :
In Europe there is/was :
HC18 : almost exactly like the US model (except for those boats that were made with retr. centreboards)
HC Pacific : an 18ft boat with a front tramp, totally different design than the HC18 (the hull shape reminds me of a Hurricane) it doesnot have centreboards or daggerboards but a type of small keel (like the Dart). These are "fun" boats and do not go that fast.
Hobie Cat Pearl : is a simplified Hobie Tiger, with the retr. centreboards exactly like the old HC18's have here. (the centreboard design is VERY solid, very simple and almost foolproof)
