Am relativily new to sailing but want to gain experience in bigger waters than the flat lakes I have sailed for the last few years..When listening to the nws radio am I correct in assuming that 2ft. waves and 10kt winds would be comfortable sailing for me as a beginning point? At what point does it become more work than fun? |

One of the many websites I visit is called http://www.ikitesurf.com Go to whatever website or marine forecast works for you. Check out the weather/wind for your area, and most of all, check out the GUSTS. Wind by itself is no problem,...well up to about 25 knots, it's those gusts and swirls that will get you every time. Even if you've been sailing for many years, unless you can 'read' the water and wind and 'see' the gusts coming, you'll go swimming more often than not. So go out in 10 knots and some chop.... and like all of us, get wet and learn your limits, and be safe. |

I use two different websites for wind forecasting that both work great but give you the info in a different format. They are Windfinder and Sailflow. I like that they forecast the average and gusts for the day and time of day. With any weather forecast there are errors but I have found them to be pretty good, even a few days out. |

I've been using WindGuru longer but Windfinder has an easier to read layout for me. Both have IOS and Android apps but again, the Windfinder app is even more intuitive again. I'm very lucky in that I don't live in a majorly populated area but my bay has long been a premier wind surfing and now kiteboarding spot so my watery backyard is included in both web tools. |
