Post subject:  Anyone have 4 legged crew?

The air has been light down here in Alabama (when it's not been raining) lately. I took our Lab with me to Lake Martin for a little cruise. Single-handing the boat in light air was easy with the Lab almost asleep on one of the wings. Thunderstorms popping up on a Summer afternoon is common down here-except that they can be on you in a flash. Well-one popped up as I tacked to get back to camp. As I was flying a hull to get back-and trying not to kill myself in the process, the Lab went overboard. With whitecaps on the water, I decided NOT to turn around and test my single-handed righting setup, and instead furl the jib and head into the wind. She is a good swimmer and I got her back on board. I have ordered a flotation vest for her next trip. Image

I have a Golden Retriever that I've considered taking out on the boat but wondered if her toe nails would damage the tramps. Have you seen any wear/damage caused by your dog?

Thanks,

Mark

Post subject:  Absolutly!

We have a 6yo Labradoodle that loves to go out. He has his own pfd. I've never taken him out solo but he loves to lay on the wing next to my wife.

i almost bought some foot protectors used by hunting dogs before we went for the first time. She just doesn't move around enough to need them. Claws have not been an issue. Labs and Goldens will pick a spot, or where you tell them, lay down and watch the world go by.

Eddie (our doodle mutt) has become quite the sailor - even jumped off the end of the dock to come after me when I went out without him. He hasn't gone MOB (DOB?) yet but I probably ought to get a jacket for him. Toe nails on the tramp haven't been an issue - they don't seem to dig in. As WCMD mentioned, he chills out pretty soon and simply enjoys the ride.

The keelboaters around here buy PFD's/get PFD's made for their four legged sailors....
Sure they can swim well, however how do you lift a dog back on the boat?
The PFD has a grab handle, which makes it easy.
Ready about? Woof.
