We bought a new mast base hinge casting for our 1988 Hobie 18 from a Hobie dealer - it is black instead of aluminum colored like the old one. The hole the attachment pin goes through is drilled slightly off center (unlike the old one which is centered) so the hinge casting doesn't lie flat against the mast base like the old one did. My dealer said they had heard some of them don't fit. Any suggestions? I don't want to drill the hole larger & weaken it. I also worry that it might not fit right to step the mast. Has anyone had this problem?

I'm sure it is just changes in tooling after all these years. The current cup hinge fits a current base. Just pass a drill through the two parts when properly meshed (remove the hinge pin).

On one of my boats.... the drill pass through required wearing away enough material to expose the dolphin striker post and it still didn't fit right. It seems like the new style vs the old style had different hole positions. 2-rivet vs 4-rivet mast bases. Mine came with a slightly bent pin that kindof worked, but I ended up finding another cup that fit properly from a newer mast.

Good luck.

If it is only minor misalignment, try instead using a screw driver that has a shaft slightly smaller in diameter than the 3/16" pin that Hobie provides. The smaller diameter will still be strong enough and the handle will make installing and removing the pin easier.

Consider this mod to the mast base.

Mine isn't an exact fit either ('82 boat). Thanks to this board I swapped out the standard mast step pin with a slightly smaller stainless phillips head screw driver and it works just fine.

I have a new front crossbar, new mast step and new dolphin striker that I am replacing in the next few weeks. I found the prior post regarding washer positioning a great suggestion and will do same.

To tag into the post. I got a new bearing but no screw. The parts manual says it's part # 8030211. Does anyone know whether this is a standard screw that can be bought at H D or similar place?

Looks like it is a 1/4”-20 x 1” long machine screw. Standard size and should be available at HD. Just make sure you get stainless.
